New EU Ecolabel criteria for six widely used types of detergents to be ‘microplastic free’

The Commission is launching the revised EU Ecolabel criteria for six widely used types of detergents. They include the following ‘product groups’: laundry, industrial laundry, dishwasher, industrial dishwasher, hand dishwashing and hard-surface cleaning detergents.

A significant step is that all detergents awarded with the EU Ecolabel will now be free from microplastics. In addition they will have to meet stricter requirements for plastic packaging. Karmenu Vella, Commissioner for the Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries said: “The EU Ecolabel is a green brand you can trust. Over the last 25 years it has set standards and kept pace with modern life. This product offering of microplastic free detergents is the latest in cleaning products with the new EU Ecolabel. They will help better protect our seas and ocean, and will generate less waste and CO2.”

The EU Ecolabel help consumers and companies to choose products that have a lower environmental impact throughout their lifecycle in the framework of the Commission’s flagship circular economy package. Once the new criteria come into effect later in June, they will be valid for 6 years. Companies already holding the EU Ecolabel have 12 -18 months to adapt to the new requirements.
